Progressionista Book Club |
Where girls read for fun
This book club meeting, we learned how to be citizens of the world! Our progressionista, Sachi Lewis, owner of S.L.A.Y.S. Travel, taught us how to not only plan a trip effectively but she inspired us to use travel to transform our lives! After her talk, we did a fun activity where we planned our own trips! We researched to plan out our itineraries, book our transportation tickets, and even pack our bags! The next stop is reading Judy Moody: 8 1/2 Days Around the World by Megan McDonald.

We went to the carnival at this month's book club meeting! After listening to our speaker, Ms. Mercedes, a talented confectioner who makes carnival-style concessions, she taught us how to make our own cotton candy. We kept the meeting going by designing our own caramel apples! We’re super ready to start reading Flor and Miranda: Steal the Show by Jennifer Torres, a book about girls who work at the carnival!
This meeting was delicious! We heard from the super talented baker Jessica Barnes who taught us how to design our very own “pizza cake”! We discussed baking trends and what school subjects we need to make baking happen! After that, we started reading our new read, Cupcake Club by Sheryl Berk together! What a sweet meeting!
It was so much fun learning about start ups in this meeting! After hearing from our progressionista Asia Rawls, founder of The CEO Experience who started her career as a tech professional for a start up company— we came up with our own business ideas and pitched them for judges during Progressionista Shark Tank! We are SO ready to read Start Up Squad by Nicole C. Kear, & Brian Weisfeld by this month!
Who said math can’t be fun!?! We had a blast this past weekend for the first meeting of our Detroit East group! Our Progressionista was Dr. Ingrid Macon, CEO of Math Expansion (an amazing math game!), owner of the Detroit Teacher Store, and Data Analyst for Detroit Public Schools.
She taught us how math is incorporated into every one of those roles and how we can use math and entrepreneurship to live out our dreams! We also learned how to play Math Expansion with the creator herself. We’re so excited to read The Miscalculations of Lightening Girl by Stacy McAnulty. Our first meeting of our sixth program year was ENGINEERED perfectly!
The Progressionista was Crystal Watkins, a phenomenal engineer and computer scientist. After hearing her speak about her career journey, we engineered own structures using Legos. This month's read is Ellie the Engineer by Jackson Pearce. Progressionista celebrated our fifth year of girls reading and leading with The Girl Power Tea Party. Our annual year event celebrated the power within all of us with our guest author speaker Sandra Epps, author of Girl Power: Discover the Princess Within. We enjoyed poetry by Raina Baker, special speeches from this year's graduates, and a whole lot of girl power! We're ready for next school year but until then we enjoyed each other for our favorite summer event. Our west and east Detroit groups ended the school year yesterday with our all too exciting Book Jeopardy! The girls answered questions about the books they read and the professional women they met over the program year! They won great prizes and celebrated! We’re so proud!
At our eighth book club meeting for Detroit West, we learned about the power of a secretary! After hearing from our amazing progressionista, who has had several amazing admin assistance roles, we did a filing and scheduling relay race!!! We’re all geared up to start reading Front Desk by Kelly Yang.
Our April 2019 Progressionista for Detroit West is Nickelita Jeffery, Executive Secretary for the Detroit Police Department. She has had a long career of being a secretary and administrative assistant to directors, commanders, and other leaders. Her talk inspired us and taught us the history and dignity of the role of being a secretary. At our fourth book club meeting for Detroit East, we learned how to manage our money! Thanks to our amazing accountant progressionista, the girls learned about accounting, budgeting, and financial literacy. After that, they did their own budgeting activity with teams! We’re so excited to read Cleo Edison Oliver: Playground Millionaire by Sundee T. Frazier.
Our April 2019 Progressionista for Detroit East is Andrena Taylor, Certified Public Accountant and Senior Associate. She shared her wisdom about her career journey and how she budgets as a recent college graduate who wants to make strong financial decisions. We will use her sage advice as we make better financial decisions of our own! |
