Where girls read for fun
We are so excited to hear from our November 2020 Progressionista, Ryen, a delightful teacher! Ms. Ryen has been innovating her way through teaching in-person and virtually during this year's pandemic. In her interview, she offers our girls expert advice on learning at home and staying motivated during this pandemic. We honor her for being an #essentialwoman! Our new read is All of the Answers by Kate Messner, where a super unique pencil takes a student on one fun r The girls' Book Experience Box this month included a chalkboard, colorful chalk, teacher-approved stickers, and school supplies.

We are so excited to hear from our October 2020 Progressionista, Taylor, an inspiring nurse! Though she is primarily a pediatric nurse, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed her into working with adult patients as well. We honor her for being an #essentialwoman! Our new read is The Midnight Gang by Daniel Walliams, an adventurous book about a one-of-a-kind hospital midnight shift staff. The girls' Book Experience Box this month included a stethoscope, nurse clipboard with pulse tracking sheet, and some fun sweet treats! We officially launched Progressionista Home. Watch our first video of our Progressionista, Akira. She's an essential woman and mail carrier who we admire! Each girl received a Book Experience Box with a mailing activity and the book From the Front Desk of Zoe Washington. We are so excited to launch this program in a new and exciting way! What a year has 2020 been for all of us! Despite its challenges, this is the first time many of our girls have been able to explore the beauty of home.
That's why, we are so happy to share our vision for our seventh program year: Progressionista Home We're bringing the inspiration and joy of Progressionista to each girl's house. Here is what we will do: SHARE A STORY! High-quality videos with Progressionistas sharing their story will be produced and sent to girls enrolled in program monthly. DELIVER A BOOK EXPERIENCE! Boxes highlighting the Progressionista will include a book and activity related to her career and safely be distributed to doorsteps, BUILD SISTERHOOD THROUGH WRITING To foster sisterhood, Progressionista Home will include a pen pal program where girls can write letters to each other with all of the supplies needed in each monthly box. Ready to begin turning the pages while propped up on your own pillows? Sign up (or your daughter up!) here. A special thank you to the Detroit Public Library Foundation for sponsoring us this school year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, our March 2020 meetings at all of our locations are canceled. We miss you! Here's something you can do during our time away from each other. We BLOSSOMED at this book club meeting. We heard from our Progressionista, Sonia Turner, founder of Words and Blossoms, and learned all about calligraphy and floral arrangements! We created our own calligraphy on chalkboards and designed our own floral arrangements. The best part is we are all set to start reading Blooming by Kimberly Willis Holt!
We are amped for college after this meeting! CEO of Quad College Advising and attorney, Emphani Aldridge, was our Progressionista and she shared the ultimate college prep gems. After hearing from her, the girls worked with our Blue Crew and some college resource books to research the college perfect for them. Afterwards, they designed college announcement posters!!!! What an amazing way to start our next book Magnificent Mya Tibbs: Spirit Week Showdown!
We got the job at our meeting this weekend! Our progressionista was HR veteran Shanika Dennis who taught us about Human Resources, applying for jobs, and interview etiquette! After her talk, we did a fun role play activity where we applied and interviewed for jobs with each other— we even got to dress the part! We’re all inspired to start reading Amelia Bedelia: On the Job! ✨😊💗
This meeting had us in stitches! We Laughed Out Loud with comedienne and actress Delorean Brown and she helped us write our own jokes and perfect our improv skits! We took home the book Funny Girl for our next read and two of our mom’s received Tiffany Haddish books to read along with us this month! Thanks Delorean for sharing your time with us!
This weekend, Progressionista became squeaky clean when Lutece Shreve, Owner of A.L.L. Clean Home and Commercial Care spoke to us. After she shared her journey to entrepreneurship in cleaning, she taught us how to make our own natural cleaning products! We had a blast testing them on surfaces around the library basement. Now we’re super ready to read Amelia Bedelia Cleans Up!
