Where girls read for fun
Our third meeting for Detroit East was too much fun. We met a real martial arts champion, learned some self-defense moves, and made some positive affirmation cards to keep us mentally equipped! This month's read is Eliza Bing is (Not) a Big, Fat Quitter by Carmella Van Vleet.
Our March 2019 Progressionista for Detroit East is Morgan Plowden! She is a 10-time world champion for martial arts! She traveled all over the world not only competing for winning titles but competing for women equality in the sport! Currently, she makes time to teach children martial arts as an instructor while still competing!

Our seventh book club meeting for Detroit West was all about law and order! We met our amazing progressionista, attorney Sharae Williams, gave each other legal counsel, and argued our case in front of a “judge”! This month's read is All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook!
Our March 2019 Progressionista for Detroit West Sharae Williams is an attorney at Dickinson Wright Law Firm. A graduate of Wayne State University School of Law, she talked to the girls about reading her way to the top, passing the bar, and starting her dream career in the city she loves. Our second meeting for Detroit East was all about politics and power! We sure know how to campaign!!!! Wow! Our girls learned all about politics and campaigning! The best part is they came up with their own platforms, designed their own posters, and gave their own campaign speeches!
This month's read is President of the Whole Sixth Grade by Sherri Winston. Our February 2019 Progressionista for Detroit East is Taylor Harrell! She is a political consultant with a deep appreciation for policies that enhance the quality of life for black women and girls. She also serves as the Secretary of the Detroit Young Democrats and a member of the Michigan Democratic Party. Currently, Taylor serves as the Director of Policy & Research at a non-profit organization, CitizenDetroit. Our sixth meeting this school year was full of singing drama! After meeting an amazing young opera singer, we got together and wrote our own operas equipped with costumes and our own voices! We had so much fun, can’t you tell?! This month's read is the Sweetest Sound by Sherri Winston.
Our February 2019 Progressionista for Detroit West is Corinthia Sims! An amazing young woman who has accomplished so much in the opera world! After snagging a scholarship for singing to college, she became trained to sing opera and won countless competitions around the country! She is a gifted singer but also a music teacher, teaching young minds about their inner and outer voice! Our first meeting on Detroit’s east side was a dream! We met the owner of Smoothie Queen, made our own smoothies, and learned everything we needed to know about Progressionista! Our new read is One Day and One Amazing Morning on Orange Street by Joanne Rocklin.
Our January 2019 Detroit East Progressionista is Ayanna Turner, owner of Smoothie Queen, a mobile smoothie company that prides itself on healthy drinks in a convenient package! Her journey toward entrepreneurship and creating a healthier lifestyle was an inspiration to all of the girls who attended! A new group of girls with the beaming spirit of girl power and literacy! What is better than that? Thanks to the Awesome Foundation for making this east side group possible. Our fifth meeting this school year was newsworthy! After hearing from a local journalist, we came up with our own questions to interview each other and developed our own news stories! This month's read is Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Smart Miss Know-It-All by Rachel Renée Russell.
Our January 2019 Progressionista is Kat Stafford, Detroit Free Press journalist. She shared with us her amazing journey toward becoming a journalist at one of the top publications in the nation! We loved her memories from being a student in Detroit and her passion for reporting and writing! Our fourth meeting this school year taught us the beauty of architecture! After hearing from an amazing female architect, we drew our own home sketches, built models using unusual supplies, and got expert critiques on our design! This month's read is The House that Lou Built by Mae Respicio.
Our December 2018 Progressionista is Dima Daima, architect and lead designer at Gensler Detroit. She told us about her amazing education and passion for architecture. Her beautiful talk showed us how our careers can be something we truly love. We are so grateful for her example and expertise! Have you heard the great news? Thanks to the Awesome Foundation, we can serve more girls in Detroit! What better way than heading to the east side? Our third meeting of this program year we got a taste of our own medicine! After hearing from the coolest pharmacist ever, we wrote our own prescriptions, and filled them using candy style pills. This months read is George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl.
Our November 2018 Progressionista is Jacinda- Abdul Mutakabbir. She is a Doctor of Pharmacy and researcher. Her inspiring journey not only taught us what it takes to be a pharmacist but how to never give up. We also got to ask her all of the questions we had about medicine and her insight was amazing! Our second meeting of this program year was the sweetest, literally! We had a cake demonstration from a star baker where we learned all about the basics of cake and got to be creative by decorating our own. Our new read is Cupcake Cousins: Summer Shower.
Our October 2018 Progressionista is Jessica Barnes, owner of Jaeellebee Cakes and Sweets! Her unique cakes are impressively beautiful and equally delicious. She taught us about her journey to becoming such a talented baker and how she balances it with business so well. Thank you Jessica! |
