Where girls read for fun
Our latest Progressionista Alesia Adams is a food scientist and enthusiast. Besides cooking out-of-this-world meals for her family and friends, she has committed her life to teaching people the science behind what they eat.
Alesia's go-to book is Margaret Wittenberg's New Good Food: Essential Ingredients for Cooking and Eating Well. This book is a guide to teaching us how to shop practically and organic while also giving us tips on being more sustainable. Also, this book doesn't recommend foods that aren't carried at most grocery stores (like most of our favorite cooking shows!). Instead, it profiles the foods available at most super markets to explain what makes it healthy, unhealthy or plain detrimental to our bodies.
"New Good Food is my favorite book on the science behind what we eat," said Alesia. "I love it because it gives a great description of all foods and ingredients and how they can effect our bodies."
Margaret Wittenberg, the author of New Good Food, and Alesia have something in common-- they both began their careers in food science at Whole Foods, one of the leading grocers in conscious food options for its customers.
"I appreciate what I learned at Whole Foods," said Alesia, "Working for a company whose mission is to sell food that is good for our bodies, and rather tasty too, has changed my perspective on what it means to simply eat."
Alesia lives by the quote, "let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food." She doesn't just believe food should be good for us but that it should taste good to us. Check out some of the very tasty treats she created for our first annual tea party last year here!
