Where girls read for fun
Our first meeting of the school year got us right on track! We learned all about being a superstar athlete from a genius student, made our hand relay batons, and did a track and field hand-off demonstration! Our new read is The Second Wind by Kate Fagan, all about a girl who manages tough family issues by running track.
Our September 2018 Progressionista is Sade Reid! Track & Field athlete and star student! She ingeniously manages earning a 4.0 GPA while being junior class president and doing programs at Stanford University, University of Miami and more! We were so inspired by her talk about "staying on track" during a hectic school year and being our best selves! Thank you Sade!

Progressionista celebrated year four with a positivity-infused tea party featuring Korene E. J. Smith, author and illustrator of Phenomenally Me! It was a joy celebrating another year of inspiring girls through reading for leisure and women empowerment. We spent our last book club of the school year celebrating all of the books we read and speakers we met! We played our annual Book Jeopardy where the girls answered questions about every book and speaker. It was so much fun. Needless to say, we are so ready to celebrate at this year's tea party!
We went on our first field trip to Belle Isle! The girls met an amazing female park ranger that showed them the many daring and exciting parts of her job. They also explored the aquarium and the conservatory during the trip. The best part was the bus drive where the girls were able to bond over the book discussion.
Our April 2018 Progressionista is Jacinda Binghoff, a Belle Isle park ranger for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. We loved her story of how she worked her way up to become a park ranger all while being her true self! It was awesome to see cool pictures of her cutting down huge trees and cutting pipes right before our eyes with fire! What an experience before reading our next book, A Return to the Isle of the Lost by Melissa de la Cruz. A special thank you to Belle Isle Conservancy for setting up this field trip for us! The March 2018 meeting had the wheels on the bus going round and round! We met an awesome school bus driver who taught us about safety on and off the bus. After she spoke, two of our very own book club girls spoke about their job as school safeties. Our new read is The Worst Class Trip Ever by Dave Barry.
The March 2018 progresssionista is Renita Smith! We loved hearing her fun story about being inspired to drive buses and all of the cool places she takes kids! This was also our first meeting where Ms. Kimberly taught us about mindfulness and gave us our very own glitter calming jars. You can't be a good reader, without learning to be more mindful! Our February 2018 meeting was all about the power of journaling. We got to hear from an amazing blogger and writer! She taught us how journaling changed her life before we had a chance to create and paint our own beautiful journals! Our new read is This Journal Belongs to Ratchet by Nancy J. Cavanaugh.
The February 2018 progresssionista is Kori A. Winters, blogger and writer of According to Kori. Her amazing journey to starting her blog, producing relatable content, and how sharing her story impacted so many people was an inspiration to say the least. Her current journal challenge has us excited to write in our journals while we read this month! Our January 2018 meeting was all about athletics! We had a sit down conversation with a top tennis player! She showed us some on-the-court moves before we made our own "tennis rackets" and competed using balloons! Our next book is Astra's Mixed Up Mission, all about a star athlete.
The January 2018 progresssionista is Lauren Taylor Hughes, tennis player and recent graduate of Wayne State University! Her inspiring talk got the girls excited about team work, hard work, and getting up and moving! Our December meeting was twintastic! We learned how to solve problems from twin social workers, paired up into "twin" groups to be caseworkers for a day, and then presented our social work solutions. Our new read is Twintuition: Double Vision by Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry!
Our December 2017 progresssionistas are Kyona and Kyronda Tate. Twin sisters who both have earned their Masters of Social Work and are working as social workers in the city of Detroit. They inspired the girls with their journeys of both choosing careers to help serve others and life in general as identical twins! We had the fun opportunity of learning how to be personal chefs!Just in time for Thanksgiving, we made our own gourmet turkey wraps, learned about kitchen safety and sanitation, and how to deal with clients as a professional chef! Our new read is Junie B. Jones' Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten by Barbara Park.
Our November 2017 progresssionista is Shanel Dewalt, head chef and owner of Divine Indulgence Personal Chef Services LLC. Her incredible story of how cooking gave her joy even during dark times and her journey toward being a professional chef was super inspiring! We're so excited to know how to make a new dish and know what it takes to be a chef! During this month's book club, we became child care experts! We had a crash course on how to operate a day care center while participating in a "baby changing" relay race to learn about the ins and outs of taking care of a baby while having a blast. Our October read is Gabby Duran and the Unsittables by Elise Allen, a book that weaves together hilariously fun themes about babysitting and childcare.
Our October 2017 progresssionista is Kimberly Baker Waldon, owner of Nurturing Nest-- a child care center in Detroit. She has an amazing journey from building her at-home daycare into a fully functioning childcare center on the city's westside. She shared many amazing tips and steps to taking care of children and showed girls that they too can have a future in childcare from babysitting to being an childcare owner like herself! |
