Where girls read for fun
We kicked off the fourth year of Progressionista on a positive note! We learned about the importance of living a positive life from an incredible wellness coach and meditation expert. After participating in a meditation, the girls wrote affirmations on meditation pillows to take home. Our September read is Inside Out: Driven By Emotions-- and will inspire them even further to understand their emotional behaviors.
Our September 2017 progresssionista is Toni Jones, founder of WifeComma-- a wellness literacy brand for women. She dedicated her life to teaching women to "style their minds" through meditation coaching , mentorship, and powerful speaking engagements. We learned so much about our emotions and having a positive life through her story and can't wait to put what she taught us to use!

Progressionista wrapped up our third year of inspiring girls to read their way to becoming powerful women! Our annual tea party featured author of No Matter What and mompreneur Jasmine Bonner. We celebrated our last book club meeting of the year with a fun game of Progressionista Jeopardy! We answered questions about all of our books and speakers this year. It was amazing to see how much we've learned and retained!
For the rest of the meeting, we had a fun-filled game day equipped with board games and the girls' favorite...homemade slime! What a cool way to end such an awesome year. The Need for Women Who Read
One of Progressionista's principles is, "Women Who Read, Lead." Our Women Who Read campaign honors the many phenomenal women who have read their way to the top. Whether it's our Progressionista speakers who inspire our participants to read or the celebrity women like Oprah Winfrey who credit books to their success— women who read are changing the world each day. You can help us show Detroit girls how reading for leisure leads to life's greatest joys in three ways during the month of May! 1. Give! Support the work of Progressionista by donating to our Generosity Campaign. Your generous donation will help us continue to inspire girls to become Women Who Read! You can donate now until Saturday, May 13th! Help us help girls see the possibilities in life through our book club. Click here to learn more. 2. Share! Calling all #WomenWhoRead on social media! Answer: What book has made you into the woman you are today? Upload a pic of the book or anything related to the book and tag us! On every Wednesday of the month, we will repost our favorite posts! 3. Wear! We know how much books mean to so many women around the world, especially women leaders! The last week of May, we will be launching our Women Who Read, Lead tees! Wear a message that will not only show your love of books but inspire every girl who looks in your direction to read as well. Stay tuned on how you can purchase yours! Our April 2017 meeting featured a real live ice princess! We talked about figure skating with a professional synchronized skater, watched her performances, and made our own ribbon wands! Our April read is Dork Diaries' Tales from a Not-So-Graceful Ice Princess. The April 2017 progressionista is Donae Poe, professional figure skater. She has skated for over 20 years and has competed professionally with Team USA all over the country and world. We were so fortunate to learn about her journey and hard work. At the March 2017 book club meeting we were dentists for the day! We learned how to do impressions, drilled out cavities on a cool tooth model and did mock fill-ins! Our February read Smile by Raina Telgemeir.
The March 2017 progressionista is Dr. Tiffani McElrath, dentist and passionate community servant! She not only changes lives through transforming people's teeth but goes out into the community and shares the importance of dental health. At the February 2017 book club meeting we learned how to love ourselves-- naturally! We made our own leave in conditioners from scratch while listening to a natural hair guru give us tips on having a natural hair routine. Our February read is Ever After High: Truth or Hair (A School Story) by Suzanne Selfors.
The February progressionista is Micalyn Foreman, digital strategist and natural hair expert! Her popular Youtube channel LoveNaturally is filled with natural hair tutorials, inspirational videos, and amazing content. At the January 2017 book club meeting we became crime scene investigators. We learned first-hand how to look for clues on a crime scene, dust for fingerprints, and how all of our unique fingerprints are created! This month's read is 10 True Tales of Crime Scene Investigators by Allan Zulle.
The January progressionista is Paris Johnson, forensic technician for the Detroit Police Department. Her tenacity after getting a degree in Biology led her to study Forensic Science and gaining experience that led to her dream job! The November 2016 book club meeting was all about Girls Who Lead! We learned all about the election process, had our own campaign activity and got to vote-- "I Voted" stickers included! This month's read is "The Tapper Twins Run for President" by Geoff Rodkey.
The November progressionista is Shaunte Wilcher, campaign manager and civil rights advocate. When she's not working on causes she believes in she's in her law school classes learning even more about our laws and government. She taught the girls all about what it takes to run for office and advocate for change in their communities. Our October 15 meeting turned into a Progressionista Pageant. We made crowns, sashes and came up with our own platforms for community service. Our next read is Beauty Queen (Whatever After)
by Sarah Mlynowski. The October 2016 progressionista is pageant winner and overall queen Teresa Alvarez! The girls couldn't get enough of her triumphant story of overcoming obstacles and losses to win her first of many pageant titles. The best part was her explanation of the service behind pageantry and sharing all of the amazing ways she give back to the community. |
